D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is hoping a rate hike on parking meters during peak hours will raise more than $3 million next year.
A D.C. Council committee has approved a plan to charge higher rates at parking meters during peak periods. The plan, called the performance-parking program, has been tested on H Street in Northeast, D.C. on Capitol Hill and in Columbia Heights in recent years.
Mayor Vincent Gray is hoping it will raise more than $3 million next year, and he wants to use the money to improve bus service and alternative transportation options.
Councilmember Mary Cheh is also a fan, and says parking rates ought to reflect market demand. She says it will help more people find parking spaces to run errands to local businesses.
