For decades, people have been talking about widening Route One in Fairfax County, a busy road that connects Prince William County with Alexandria. Last year, the Department of Defense awarded $180 million to widen the roads as part of the BRAC process. Since that time, a dilemma has presented itself to the Federal Highway Administration — where should the wider road be constructed?
It's a dilemma that pits two historic properties against each other. If the road is widened in its current location, it would encroach on Woodlawn Plantation, which is protected by the National Trust for Historic Places. If it's widened to the southeast, a historic stable and graveyard would be disrupted.
Delegate Scott Surovell represents the area in the general assembly: "The stables has been there for 61 years. The mansion has been there for over 200 years, and we need to do this in a way impacts both of them as minimally as possible but we also need to get this road widened. And we can't widen it in a way that's going to get this stuck in court for years."
An environmental assessment is expected to be completed this summer.
