District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray is outlining a 20-year plan to make the nation's capital, what he calls, "the greenest, healthiest and most livable city in the nation."

Gray's sustainability plan includes a series of ambitious goals, including growing the city by a quarter million people, slashing the city's obesity rate in half, and cutting District-wide energy use and greenhouse emissions by 50 percent.

The plan touches on nearly every aspect of life in D.C.: climate, energy, food, buildings, jobs, and water ways — one of the benchmarks includes making both the Anacostia and Potomac rivers safe for swimming and fishing, another involves providing homes and apartments with the equipment for composting waste.

While the plan includes calls for some immediate actions, city leaders say the purpose of the blueprint is to provide residents with an ambitious picture of what is possible for D.C. in the future.

The mayor will also cut the ribbon on a new bridge that's part of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The bridge provides a link between Benning Road in Southeast Washington D.C. and the Tidal Basin.
