Metro is testing a new system where riders can securely park their bicycles at certain stations, for a fee.
Metro is trying out a new style of bicycle parking lot for people who bike to rail stations.
The transit agency has begun testing a secure bike parking enclosure called "Bike & Ride" at the College Park station on the Green Line. It's on the first level of the station's parking garage and, after a trial period with a select set of users trying out the facility, it should open to the public next month. Metro says the 2,400 square foot structure has space to secure 100 bikes.
People using the Bike and Ride will need a personal access card to get in and Metro says that will provide a second level of security beyond a bike lock.
There will be a $5 fee to get an access card, and after that, bike parking will cost between 2 and 5 cents per hour. There are no monthly or annual fees.
