The "Pavilion Promenade," a mock-up of an indoor-outdoor dining and waterfront recreation era imagined as part of the National Mall Design Competition.
Some neglected sites on the National Mall may soon see a makeover, as finalists have been picked in the National Mall Design Competition -- a contest wherein designs were solicited to overhaul some of the Mall's more overlooked locations.
The plans include lakeside gardens, underground pavilions at the Washington Monument and grassy new amphitheaters.
The competition was sponsored by the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall to help restore sites for the National Park Service. The finalists' concepts are on display at the Smithsonian Castle and at the National Museum of American History.
Since last September, architects and designers have been competing for the chance to redesign areas near the Capitol, Washington Monument and Constitution Gardens.
