Students In Northwest D.C. Break Ground On 'People's Garden'

High school students in Columbia Heights are getting a lesson in sweaty equity.

A corner of Columbia Heights is getting a bit greener thanks to the USDA and some local students. Today is the day for the groundbreaking of what is being called "People's Garden."

Located next to Bell Multicultural High School, students will be providing the sweat equity necessary to make the garden a success.

One of those students is 18-year-old senior Francis Hngobounn, he's a senior: "Today I'm going to be planting some berry bushes in front of the school. I decided to be involved because I wanted my community to be green."

The teacher who was advising the project is Suzanne Dadzie.

"The project came about from the students," says Dadzie. "We founded a Green Team about a year ago and talked with the students about projects that they wanted to do. And we're very fortunate to get funding from the Daughters of the American Revolution."

If you want to see the garden as it grows, it's located on Irving St. between 16th St. and 15th St. NW.
