In an effort to lower crime in the District, police have reassigned and 200 officers to focus on street crimes and 911 calls.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday night, three people, including two women, robbed a victim at 22nd and S Street NW. Several hours later, just before 1 a.m. this morning, another robbery took place at 21st and N Street.

The number of armed robberies that have taken place in the District is twice as high in the first two months of 2012 compared to the same period last year, according to a report in the Washington Times.

The Times quotes internal police documents. Many of the robberies target personal electronic devices. At this point no one has been killed or seriously injured in these muggings.

D.C. police say they have reassigned and prioritized 200 officers to focus on street crimes and 911 calls reporting suspicious people in residential neighborhoods.

Authorities are using other tactics to catch muggers, but will not publicly discuss the methods. But even as arrests continue to be made, the number of new street robberies is outpacing those arrests, particularly in upper Northwest neighborhoods where this type of crime is unheard of.
