The number of murders in the District declined significantly last year, but during a weekend memorial service for young victims, Mayor Vincent Gray spoke out about a particularly senseless shooting.
David Lee Robinson, 19, died on Sunday during what Gray described as a gun battle that left the streets littered with bullet casings.
The shooting took place at the 5700 block of Foote Street, NE. Police responded to the scene around 2 a.m. Sunday morning to sounds of gunshots in the area of 58th and Foote Streets. When authorities responded to the scene, they found an adult man suffering from gunshot wounds, and who was unconscious and unresponsive. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later pronounced dead. Gray says Robinson was killed over a pair of tennis shoes.
The shooting happened just a few blocks away from a high school and an elementary school. This is the third homicide this year in the District.
