The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the U.S. Department of Treasury's headquarters in downtown D.C. a gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Dan Tangherlini, a Treasury Department spokesman, says the U.S. Treasury Building - a national historic landmark - was recently renovated to increase natural light, improve heating and cooling systems, reduce water use, and enhance recycling. Tangherlini says the improvements are saving taxpayers $3.5 million in facilities costs.

The Treasury Department, constructed between 1836 and 1869, is the oldest building to receive the coveted certification.
