GOP Candidate Drops Out Of D.C. Council Race

An accountant who raised questions about D.C. councilmember Harry Thomas' nonprofit organization has dropped out of the race for an at-large Council seat.

Republican Tim Day announced his decision Monday. There is now one Republican, Mary Brooks Beatty, running for the at-large seat held by independent Michael A. Brown.

There are no Republicans on the 13-member D.C. Council, and just 6.5 percent of district voters are registered with the GOP.

Thomas, a Democrat, is under investigation by federal authorities, and FBI and IRS agents raided his home this month. The D.C. Attorney General began investigating him after Day filed a complaint about his nonprofit, Team Thomas.

The councilmember was later accused of diverting more than $300,000 in city funds for personal use, much of it through the Team Thomas organization.
