MoCo Council Looking To Improve School Lunches

A report prepared for the Montgomery County council earlier this year showed public school lunches in the county meet or exceed most nutritional requirements, but added a lot more still needs to be done to get kids to eat healthy. In their first meeting on the topic since the report was released, council members still didn't have many answers.

Council president Valerie Ervin said it will take more than healthier lunches, noting that physical education requirements are not as stringent as they were a generation ago: "Fast forward 25 years, and we have a lot of kids who are really overweight. And so what's the correlation with that, the kinds of foods they eat or not, and the fact that kids are just sitting at a desk in a chair all day long."

Councilman George Leventhal noted that county school lunches met the HealthierUS Schools Challenge bronze award, but that bronze is not as good as silver or gold.
