There were 42 recorded cases of Salmonella Enteritidis all along the east coast, prompting a CDC investigation.

A salmonella outbreak has caused Wegmans Food Markets to recall approximately 5,000 lbs of Turkish Pine Nuts sold in Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania going back to July. According to Wegmans, the recall applies only to pine nuts sold in bulk -- others sold at the grocery store chain are said to be unaffected.

The recall of Turkish pine nuts, imported from Turkey by Sunrise Commodities of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., was triggered by the Center for Disease Control, which tracked 42 individuals infected by Salmonella Enteritidis across six states -- one in Maryland and four in Virginia. Two were hospitalized due to the infections, and fortunately, none have died.

Salmonella Enteritidi is an organism that causes gastrointestinal illness in healthy individuals, but can cause sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and people with weakened immune systems.

Customers who suspect they may have purchased contaminated pine nuts are urged to return them to a local store or call Wegmans' toll-free number at 1-800-934-6267. Wegmans has 79 supermarket stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
