Virginia is seeking FEMA funds to help pay for the cleanup in the wake of the flooding that struck places like Huntington, Va., pictured, in the wake of Tropical Storm Lee.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has requested a federal disaster declaration to help individuals and families in Fairfax and Prince William counties recover from flooding caused Tropical Storm Lee.

Tropical Storm Lee hit the area on September 8 and 9, and after it had passed through, assessments by FEMA, the Small Business Administration and state and local teams found more than 100 homes and business that were destroyed or sustained major damage. Approximately 500 people were displaced from their homes in Prince William County, including many families in the Holly Acres Mobile Home Park in Woodbridge

If approved, the governor's request through FEMA's Individual Assistance program would make funding available for homeowners and renters in the form of grants and low-interest loans as well as disaster housing assistance. The governor also requested disaster unemployment assistance, legal services and crisis counseling.

Virginia leaders, including the governor and Sen. Mark Warner, have leveled harsh criticism at FEMA for rejecting similar requests for assistance for victims of the recent earthquake and April's tornadoes.
