Footage from the NPS videos show tourists fleeing the structure after it was struck by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake back in August. The monument remains closed.
The National Park Services has released footage depicting the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the D.C. region August 23 from the perspective of tourists and park rangers at the top of the Washington Monument.
The footage comes from three security cameras on top of the 500-foot structure, and show park rangers ushering panic-stricken tourists to the emergency exit.
Damage from the earthquake was sufficient to crack four stones in the monument and ensure its closure for the forseeable future. Water pooling from Hurricane Irene and several storms afterward has indicated that there is likely further damage that has yet to be discovered.
