Piece Of WTC Graces Hagerstown, Md. Memorial

A piece of the World Trade Center from New York is becoming the centerpiece of a 9/11 memorial in Hagerstown, Maryland Tuesday night.

Every year Washington County holds a remembrance event in Hagerstown's city park in honor of first responders and servicemembers who have lost their lives.

This year, the county has acquired a 727 pound piece of steel from the World Trade Center -- to remember people who died that day and the emergency workers who responded.

Tuesday evening's dedication will include a procession of more than 40 emergency vehicles and a wreath-laying ceremony. The memorial ceremony, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Washington County Emergency Services Tribute Gardens and is expected to last until 8 p.m. A tree will be planted in honor of Marine Lance Cpl. Maung Htiak, a resident of Washington County who died in January while serving in Afghanistan.
