It was just moments before the Redskins took on the New York Giants at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., yesterday, and family members of those who lost their lives at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on 9/11 took the field. They were joined by family members of the Pentagon Police and first responders from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

One of those standing on the field was the son of Hadden Culp, a Prince William County firefighter that responded to the Pentagon the day after 9/11. Ten years ago, it was Hadden Culp that arrived at the Pentagon, a day after a plane crashed into it. He recalls when he and other firefighters arrived at the chaotic scene.

"Of course everybody had the same objective, to make sure that people were not hurt, and to salvage as much of the Pentagon, and rescue anybody that might still be in there," he says.

In another nod to the tenth anniversary of the attacks, Madame Tussaud's D.C. museum put its wax figure scene of three New York City firefighters hoisting the American flag amid the ruins of the World Trade Center on 9/11 outside of FedEx Field. As he gazed at it, Culp says the famous scene evokes strong feelings for firefighters.

"They're representing firefighters that were going in when people were running out. And that's what it's all about," he says. "Unfortunately, 343 firefighters died that day in New York. I was listening to the president and others this morning at the New York service ... we wish it had been a different outcome."

After all the emotion of the pregame ceremony, they did play football, and the Redskins did something they had not managed to do for their past six tries. They beat their divisional rivals the Giants 28-14.
