The health of the Chesapeake Bay is being negatively affected by the region's dairy farms, according to a recent Environmental Protection Agency report.

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued its findings from inspections of dairy operations in the Shenandoah Valley, according to the Associated Press. The inspections conducted in May were part of a multi-state effort to restore the Chesapeake Bay.

According to AP, the EPA gave much of the blame for the bay's pollution to livestock with unrestricted access to streams and pasture areas that lack vegetation.

The inspections involved seven farms total in Virginia: two farms in Harrisonburg, two in Dayton, and one each in Bridgewater, Broadway and McGaheysville.

Analysts agree farm operations and urban development are two key factors in the bay's declining health.
