Many trees and power lines are still down in the D.C. metro area, which forced some schools to close due to lack of electricity.

Most D.C. public schools will open on time today, but students at 14 of the District's traditional schools will have an extra day added to their weekends. Some schools in Montgomery County and other Maryland districts are also closed today.

DCPS has closed 14 of its approximately 120 traditional public schools today as utility crews work to restore electricity to buildings that lost power during Hurricane Irene.

Malcolm X Elementary School was added to that list at the last minute this morning due to a power outage.

Crews worked Sunday at several schools that reported leaks, minor flooding or downed trees.

In addition, more than 500 students and staff members from School Without Walls in Ward 2 will relocate Monday to Eastern High School in Ward 6. Crews are working on damage at that building after last week's earthquake.

DCPS schools closed today:

  • Anacostia Senior High School
  • Beers Elementary School
  • Coolidge High School
  • LaSalle-Backus Educational Campus
  • Malcolm X Elementary
  • Orr Elementary School
  • Oyster Adams Bilingual School (Adams Building)
  • Oyster Adams Bilingual School (Oyster Building)

Montgomery County School District also closed several schools today due to power outages.
