Power Outages And Fallen Trees Are An Obstacle For Howard County Residents
Officials in Howard County are urging residents to stay off the road as they work to restore power to traffic lights on one of the county's busiest roads.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman says traffic lights are out on Route 40, a key artery between Baltimore and suburban communities to the south.
He says downed trees are also a problem in many neighborhoods, and firefighters had to scramble to find an alternate route to a fire at an Ellicott City home this morning.
About 35,000 BGE customers are without power. But Howard County was largely spared from major flooding – even low-lying areas such as the historic downtown of Ellicott City, which sustained major damage during Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
Ulman says he'll announce this afternoon whether schools and county agencies will open tomorrow.
