Two Dead In Virginia As Hurricane Irene Heads Up East Coast

Two people are dead in southeast Virginia, as Hurricane Irene's high winds and heavy rain pound up the East Coast.

An 11-year-old boy in Newport News was killed when he was pinned under a large tree that fel through his apartment building this morning. And in Brunswick County, a tree fell on a car in Brunswick County and killed someone inside the vehicle.

"Well, they just need to be ready," says Bob Spieldenner, spokesman for Virginia Department of Emergency Management in Richmond. "We've been getting it in Richmond, and definitely toward the eastern parts of the states. We've been getting heavy winds. We’re getting more rain than expected. We’re also getting more storm surge than expected. In Hampton Roads, they’re looking at record levels."

Spieldenner cautions people in the D.C. metro area to remain cautious.

"Yes, it has weakened somewhat before it hit landfall, but it is still somewhat a serious storm, and causing destruction and power outages here in many places in Virginia," he says. "So they need to be ready to experience those types of weather that we’re getting down here in Richmond and southeast Virginia."

Meantime in Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-Md.) says Hurricane Irene will be arriving in Ocean City sooner than officials had expected.
