Emergency officials in the District are monitoring the storm's movement as it makes its way up the East Coast.

In the middle of the District's Emergency Operation Center, several dozen emergency management experts – from FEMA, the fire department, police department, PEPCO – are all monitoring Hurricane Irene through computer screens, showing the path the storm is taking through the eastern coast of the United States.

They are also making sure that any emergency that happens will be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Right now, they are still on standby operations, as the rain begins to fall throughout the District.

They say they’re ready to move as soon as any emergency takes place.
