One of the artists, Mariah Ann Johnson, has a display of paintings depicting memories of different kitchens.

"Sometimes exciting, good things happen," says Johnson. "Sometimes messes happen. Sometimes things catch on fire, you know. Interesting, cool things happen in the kitchen, kind of like the studio I guess."

Mike Dowley, an artist based in McLean, Va., says his landscapes are inspired bylocal parks.

"Heading toward Great Falls is, I think, just one of the most beautiful areas in the country," he says.

And faucets spewing puddles of fabric are the work of Rockville sculptor Maggie Gourlay.

"Art isn't what's out there," she says. "It's what the spectator sees."

The exhibit is running now through Aug. 11. On Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., the gallery will host a reception and rooftop party with the artists that will be open to the public.
