The 17 culinary teams that cooked up dishes for the barbecue didn't waste any of Maryland's bounty.

Fresh local bison from Munford, Md., topped with peanut sauce, cilantro, scallions and cabbage. Chilled cantaloupe soup with coconut cayenne ice cream. Blue corn tortilla with goat chorizo, goat cheese, and jalapeno peppers. Maple walnut french toast with berry compote, chocolate covered bacon.

The 17 culinary teams represented restaurants, hotels, catering companies and local food producers.

O'Malley hosted the "buy local cookout" Thursday afternoon to showcase Maryland's bounty and to urge Maryland residents and companies to support local food producers.

"It's good for the bay, its good for your health, and its good for the state of Maryland," O'Malley said at the barbecue.

The governor is challenging Maryland residents to include a local food product in at least one meal a day during the last week of July.
