The new and improved African American Civil War Museum will officially open with a ribbon cutting July 18.

The original African American Civil War Museum opened on U Street NW back in 1999 not far from the African American Civil War Memorial. The museum's new location at 1925 Vermont Avenue NW provides about 5,000 square feet, thanks to a $5 million renovation.

"What people are going to see is the largest collection of African American Civil Wat memorabilia in the country, dedicated solely to African American soldiers who fought for our freedom, and help keep this country united under one flag," says Frank Smith, the museum's founding director.

Today's re-opening will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication at noon. Among those expected to attend are D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (D).
