The U.S. and Canada Green City Index assessed 27 major cities for their carbon dioxide commissions, energy consumption, land use, green buildings, transportation, water quality, air quality, waste quality, and environmental governance.

In a statement, Mayor Vincent Gray called D.C. a pioneer in purchasing renewable energy, use of green transportation, and LEED certified buildings.
