D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson (left) was appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray (right) in March. The D.C. Council confirmed her appointment Tuesday.

Henderson was tapped by Mayor Vincent Gray to take over as chancellor when Michelle Rhee stepped down following 2010's mayoral election.

A former deputy to Rhee, Henderson has been praised for continuing Rhee's aggressive push for education reform while doing a better job of working with community stakeholders: neighbors, parents and teachers.

Even Nathan Saunders, head of the Washington Teachers' Union and fierce critic of Rhee, has said he didn't oppose Henderson's confirmation.

Henderson graduated from Georgetown University and is the daughter of a high school principal.
