Signal Bay Water Park in Manassas Park was evacuated Saturday afternoon after reports of a chemical smell and the appearance of a expanding plume in a shallow pool intended for young children.

Medics checked out at least a dozen children, some of whom vomited. Six children were hospitalized.

The local parks and recreation department says a pool equipment expert will be examining all the pool's chemical handling systems to see what went wrong.

The water park is expected to open next weekend as scheduled.
