Gardener Linda Blount Berry says a thief stole 160 peony stems from the garden this year and $8,000 in flowers, fruits and vegetables over the past decade.

"The fact that once again we've been violated is a terrible feeling," she says.

Now, Stein says, she thinks twice about going to the garden alone.

"Frankly, I don't feel very safe coming into this garden by myself knowing there's someone coming in here and stealing right under our nose," she says.

Plus, she says, gardeners give a portion of their produce to food banks.

"And if some guy is going to take our produce, that means there's less that's going to the people who need it," she says.

The gardeners are urging neighbors to be vigilant, snap a picture of the culprit, and call the police.
