Historic Burial Ground Is Headed For Restoration

Virginia Commonwealth University's Board of Visitors approved the transfer of the African Burial Ground to the city.

VCU had used a portion of the burial ground as a parking lot. Part of it is also believed to lie under elevated highways that run through the city. ??And with the transfer complete, a ceremony is scheduled on Tuesday to remove the asphalt and gravel from the site.??

The burial ground is believed to contain one of the nation's oldest municipal cemeteries for enslaved and freed blacks.
