BRAC Preprations: Alexandria Restricts Parking Near Mark Center

The effort is a response to more than 6,000 new commuters that are expected to head to the Mark Center, off Interstation-395 in Alexandria, later this year as part of the Base Realignment and Closure move.

Neighbors of the looming Washington Headquarters Services, and administrative faces of the military that is relocating from Fort Belvoir to Mark Center, are worried that their streets will be clogged with parked cars from Department of Defense employees.

Vice Mayor Kerry Donley says that's why the city needed to act now rather than wait until the facility opens in September.

"We're trying to do something in anticipation of a problem,” says Donley.

Here's how it would work: More than half of the neighbors in a given block would petition the city to activate the daytime parking restrictions.

"Ultimately, it's up to each individual neighborhood to decide how they want to apply this,” says Council member Rob Krupicka. “If they want to take advantage of this opportunity or not."

Those parking illegally will be hit with a $40 fine.
