Springfest is one of Ocean City's premiere special events and an unofficial kickoff to the summer season.

For the thousands strolling through the circus-like tents at Springfest this weekend, they'll have plenty to take in: hundreds of arts and craft vendors, classic coastal cuisine and pretty much any type of food on a stick you can think of. There will also be live music, including headliners George Jones and Richard Marx.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan says the annual event was started to expand the summer season.

"Previously to that, people were here Memorial day to Labor day and that was it," he says.

Special events have become one of the cornerstones of success for resort businesses, and despite rising gas prices; there's is a strong sense of optimism for this summer in Ocean City. The town hopes Springfest is just the beginning.
