Gov. Bob McDonnell declared a state of emergency Thursday, which authorizes state agencies to assist local authorities in response and recovery after a disaster.

Most of Northern Virginia was under a tornado watch until 3 p.m. Several funnel clouds were spotted Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service will be investigating whether it was a tornado that damaged the doors and roof tiles at the Harris Teeter grocery store in Bristow.

The situation is much worse farther south in Virginia, where eight people have been killed by strong storms that blew through the area, including seven people in Washington County.
