At Exxon on Connecticut Ave. NW, the price for regular gas Monday tops out at $4.33 for those paying with a credit card. The price for people paying in cash, however, is a few cents less at $4.28.

Nearby, at the Friendship Heights Shell station, a gallon of regular gas is $4.19. The lowest price in the neighborhood is $4.15 at the Washingtonian gas station near Glover Park.

All in all, District drivers should expect to pay well over $4 a gallon for the time being. That's well over the national price for gas, which is hovering at $3.83 this week.

Mark Grims fills up his SUV with regular grade gas at the Exxon station on Connecticut Avenue. The damage? $68.35.

"I think it makes you think twice about taking long trips," he says. "Driving up to New York starts to look a lot more expensive."

Automobile Association of America predicts drivers will buy less gas as a result of the spike in cost, especially if prices continue to rise even higher over the summer as predicted. The organization have recorded gas prices that have consistently increased for each of the past 26 days.
