Fairfax County police are seeking a suspect that they say slashed a woman on her buttocks with a blade while she was shopping at the Fair Oaks Mall July 25. The incident may be tied to others earlier this year.
"It's just a mindset I do not understand because once an investigation is over, there's just no reason to protect those people anymore," says Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
Dalglish says she'll push again next year to get documents in cases that are closed, such as the 2008 shooting of a 19-year-old who was pursued by Fairfax Police officers from McLean into north Arlington, where they shot and killed him.
Arlington Police Chief Douglas Scott oversaw the investigation, which is now closed. Information about the incident wasn't released at the time, as reported by the Alexandria Gazette Packet in March. Scott won't release that report "because there's information in that investigation that we choose to protect," he says.
The police chief also declined to answer specific questions about what happened that day.
