A new proposed measure in Montgomery County would ban smoking in some public spaces, including certain areas of apartment buildings and privately owned playgrounds.

Commissioners have passed a prohibition on smoking in parks and at playgrounds, which begins approximately a month from now.

Smokers will still be allowed to puff away on the beach and at the boardwalk, although some some commissioners wanted the ban to extend there as well.

With a 5 to 2 vote, commissioners rejected that ban, claiming it would be hard to inform the area's transient community about the restrictions.

Smoking in most indoor establishments in Delaware is already banned by state law.
