D.C. Abortion Fund Raises 25K For Patients Facing Medicaid Cut-Off

The D.C. Abortion Fund received some unexpected and unwelcome news Thursday.

"We got an urgent message sent out across our listserv saying we've just heard news that there are 28 women who've had their Medicaid funding pulled, and so we had less than 12 hours to scramble and try to help them raise the needed funds," says Kate Vlach, a DCAF board member.

The group was frantic to find money for women scheduled to receive care this week.

Patients scheduled this week expected local Medicaid money to cover their abortion care expenses, but the funding was cut-off Wednesday night," says Vlach.

"And having it yanked so prematurely and without warning is just such a blow to us and the women than we serve," she adds.

Thursday, DCAF was trying to piece together money for patients. Some clinics had agreed to see them with the promise of an I.O.U. from the D.C. Abortion Fund.

All 28 women were able to keep their appointments, and more donations have been rolling into the Fund, TBD reports.

The Fund has raised $25,000 to replace Medicaid funding thus far, according to TBD's Amanda Hess. Looks like they already beat their Twitter-advertised goal to break the $20,000 mark Friday.
