O'Malley's Offshore Wind Bill Stalls In Finance Committee

The Maryland Senate Finance Committee is not advancing the governor's marquee agenda items.

Chairman Thomas Mac Middletown says the committee ran out of time to resolve a number of issues raised about the governor's offshore wind energy bill before the legislative session closes next week.

The bill would have required utility companies to enter into long-term power purchasing agreements with offshore wind developers. That would have opened the door for a proposed wind farm 12 miles off the coast of Ocean City. It was expected to generate enough electricity to power almost 80 percent of the Eastern Shore.

But, uncertainty about overhead costs and the costs that could be passed down to consumers, proved enough to stall the bill.
