Metro Escalator Problems Cause Delays

Escalator repairs and maintenance continue to plague the transit authority. Friday morning, riders crowded the exit at the Foggy Bottom Metro station, waiting in long lines to walk up the escalator that was not operating.

"This is the only way out so this could be quite an emergency in here if there were a fire or something," one rider says.

A report issued earlier this year from a private consulting firm, revealed at least one escalator was breaking down every seven to eight days and it was taking longer to make necessary repairs.

Metro has already begun a year-long project to replace all three entrance escalators at the Foggy Bottom station.
