Virginia Guard Members Deploy To Afghanistan

The soldiers will serve as part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team Security Force, with the mission of helping keep crews safe as they work in potentially dangerous areas to rebuild Afghanistan's infrastructure and to help with agriculture projects and well drilling among other tasks.

The platoon is from the 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery, 116th Brigade Combat Team, based in Hampton, Va. The soldiers are scheduled to travel to Indiana Monday, where they'll undergo final mobilization training.

Their overall active-duty deployment is expected to last about a year.
