Alexandria Workers To Experience Gridlock

Mary Jane Solomon's daily commute can last as long as an hour. But when more than 6,000 people move in to the building next door, her commute could be as long as three hours.

"Well, let's do the math," she says. "I need to be at work at eight, so I would be needing to get up at four or five in the morning, I guess."

Three years from now, a new ramp will alleviate some of the congestion caused by the Washington Headquarters Service. But, as Congressman Jim Moran says, that will be too late. "This is just a disaster," he says, "and we're at the eleventh hour, and none of these proposals is going to be achieved in time to prevent this."

This week, the Center for Naval Analysis filed a $30 million lawsuit against Duke Realty Corp. for breach of contract, charging that the center signed on to be located in a business park, not a military installation.
