D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson (left) was appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray (right) in March. The D.C. Council confirmed her appointment Tuesday.

Henderson has been serving in an interim capacity since former Chancellor Michelle Rhee stepped down in the fall. Her appointment still has to be confirmed by city council members.

Henderson comes in at a challenging time as DCPS struggles to deal with a $50 million shortfall, which means larger class sizes and personnel cuts are inevitable.
