If the blossom prediction is correct, it will correspond with the national festival for the 11th-straight year.

He stresses, however, that the trees will be blooming a couple of days before and after the peak period. DeFeo says if his prediction holds true, it will be the 11th straight year the bloom falls during the three-weekend festival.

The opening ceremony is on Saturday, March 26, at the National Building Museum and the grand finale, the closing parade, is on Saturday, April 9. Another key event, the lantern-lighting ceremony, will be on Sunday, April 3.

The festival is a major event for the region's tourism industry, bringing in an estimated $150 million each year.
