Police believe the suspect is responsible for rapes and other attacks on seventeen women since 1997.

Billboards featuring sketches of the man dubbed the East Coast Rapist are running in states where the attacks took place. They're being used to generate leads in Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland and Rhode Island as well as neighboring states.

Police have also set up a Web site about the case.

Detective John Kelly of the Fairfax County Police Department, says the Web site generated 44,000 hits in 12 hours after it was launched.

Kelly says an arrest is not imminent. He called the case unusual because it involves many high-risk outdoor attacks over many years and jurisdictions.
