HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) The Maryland Public Service Commission is approving the proposed merger of Allegheny Energy and FirstEnergy Corporation. The companies announced the decision today. They have 30 days to raise any objections to conditions that largely reflect what the companies proposed.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) A young girl died and three sisters were injured in an early morning fire in Prince George's County. Fire officials say nine-year-old Kimberly Hernandez died later at Children's Hospital of injuries suffered in the fire.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Raiders have been given permission to talk to Baltimore assistant Al Saunders to fill their vacant offensive coordinator job. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said yesterday the team granted the request from the Raiders. Saunders has been an offensive consultant for Baltimore the past two seasons.
