Giffords Hailed By Lawmakers In The Region

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head on Saturday, comes from a conservative district in Arizona, which often put her on the other side of political debates from her fellow Democrat D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. But Norton says Giffords showed courage by plowing ahead in spite of the dangers.

"She's had death threats, her office has been vandalized -- all connected to her work in Congress, and yet she was out there doing what members of the People's House do, getting out and about among the people, finding what they need from us," Norton says.

Norton also says in the wake of the tragedy, party differences have disappeared.

"All this does is draw us closer together, and maybe that's what we need. Maybe we need to set another tone out there so that we have less of the kind of venom that can result in violence," Norton says.

In a statement, Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin called the attack "an affront to our democracy and to all Americans."
