D.C. Council Seat Filled Temporarily

D.C.'s Democratic State Committee has picked Sekou Biddle to temporarily fill council chairman Kwame Brown's old seat.

Biddle is a school board member and former school teacher, and he was viewed by many political observers as the outsider in the race, a long-shot to win a process dominated by party insiders.

But after some key enforcements in recent days, Biddle pulled out a tight victory over former council member Vincent Orange. It was a dead heat between the two men after two rounds of voting, and in the third, Biddle pulled it out.

The appointment is temporary. Four months from now, there will be a special election, this time open to candidates from all the parties, but Biddle will have a significant advantage over his competition, both in terms of name recognition and fundraising.
