Ocean Downs Casino Opens

The day that many people in Worcester County have been waiting for, and the day slots opponents hoped would never come is finally here: Ocean Downs Casino is set to open, and those 750 slot machines inside are ready for coins to start dropping in.

The $45 million gaming facility will become Maryland's second slots parlor Tuesday when it opens its doors just a few miles from Ocean City. Maryland's governor, Martin O'Malley, will cut the ribbon during Tuesday's ceremony.

The opening of the 34,000-square-foot casino will mark the end of years of debate and preparation, and, lawmakers hope, will create revenue for the local municipalities, pump millions of dollars into the state's public school system and help breathe new life into a rather torpid local economy.
