The Wilson High School crew team rows five days a week for two hours for 10 months of the year. They compete at the Scholastic Rowing Association competition and last year finished 13th.
Wilson High School is the District's only public high school that has a crew or rowing team. And for 25 years, students have been meeting at 5:30 in the morning to row on the Potomac River. WAMU's Kavitha Cardoza woke up way before her alarm usually goes off to meet crew members past and present one morning at the Thompson Boat House on Virginia Avenue in Northwest D.C. She met head coach Bill McLain and students Kate McCreary, Teddy Ciszewski, Skyler Hughes, Stewart Maeder, Sam Giagtzoglou, Jophie Frumin, Meredith Nissen and Gordon Gellatly.
