Pr. George's County May Get Its Own Inspector General's Office

Play associated audio

In Maryland, Prince George's County executive Rushern Baker has taken the first steps towards establishing a watchdog agency for county government. The new county executive promised during his campaign to set up an inspector general's office for the county.

It is part of Baker's pledge to clean up county politics. Last week, he asked former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke and a retired county circuit judge to lead a task force that would examine the prospect of permanent inspector general's office.

The move to create a county watchdog comes as the previous county executive, Jack Johnson, and his wife face federal corruption charges.

Its not clear how the county will pay for the watchdog office. But if it is established, Prince George's would join a small number of local governments that have an internal watchdog agency.
