Mayor-elect Vincent Gray announces that he has chosen Police Chief Cathy Lanier (center, right) to stay on for his administration. He has also named Paul Quander the new deputy mayor of public safety.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is keeping her job. Mayor-elect Vincent Gray has asked the popular police chief to stay on in his administration. Gray is rolling out a number of other public safety appointments as well.
Besides Lanier, Gray says he's also tapping Kenneth Ellerbe to run the Fire and EMS department. Ellerbe served in the top brass of the D.C. Fire Department until last year, when he left to become the fire chief in Sarasota, Fla.
The mayor-elect also announced that Irvin Nathan will be his pick for attorney general. Nathan is a former prosecutor and veteran of Capitol Hill. He currently serves as general counsel to the House of Representatives. Gray, who often battled with current attorney general Peter Nickles during the mayor's race, says he wants Irvin to "take the politics out of the office."
Finally Gray says he's asked Paul Quander to serve as his deputy mayor for public safety, a position that folded under the Fenty administration.
All the picks, except Lanier, must be confirmed by the D.C. Council.
